Words from MOIDF
“You want to change me? I’m like this world. This world will never change!”
Thirty-two years ago, Ming’s final words preluded Xiao Si’s brutal and destructive entry into adulthood in Edward Yang’s A BRIGHTER SUMMER DAY. Today, however, we find ourselves in a world with relentless changes. Over the past three years, the storms that have swept across our planet have once again proven that only change is constant and eternal.
Oscillating between hope and futility, we have been yearning for the end of the pandemic for years. And all of a sudden, it was over. What is left, and what has been changed after all these crises and disasters, be they natural or man-made?
This very question underlies the works of many directors endeavoring to engage us in conversations.
“Change” is the theme of the 7th MOIDF. The festival has selected a series of films with distinctive attitudes and aesthetics concerning the notion of change. These films portray the ups and downs of life through dramatic narratives drawn from reality and showcase cinematic breakthroughs in creative forms. In addition, the festival has included new programmes encompassing exhibitions, masterclasses and workshops to further explore the potential of the film camera in representing reality.
Imagination, even in its simplest form, ignites the flame of change. We invite you to embark on a transformative journey with us, to delve into the realms of imagination and reinvent ways of envisioning the world through the lens of cinema.
* Etymologically, from the late Latin of the word “Change” (“Cambiare”) derived “Cambium”, which came to refer to the layer of tissue between the root and the stem in plants that serves to support growth or help healing.
