Words from MOIDF
“Why do we watch documentaries?”
Children begin primary school at the age of six, and likewise the 6th MOIDF has also unveiled a new stage with the launch of the “1st Macao Documentary Competition and Exhibition”. It has been six years since we have embarked on a path that has unfolded with a lot of ups and downs and hopefully with more gains than losses, yet each year the curatorial team is still weighed down by the very question that has bugged us since the inception of MOIDF: “Why do we watch documentaries?”
Documentaries often focus on the marginalized people and issues, rendering them in the spotlight on the screen. With the theme of “The Outsider”, the 6th MOIDF has selected numerous outstanding works that offer new perspectives for us to look at the vicissitudes of life beyond the mainstream through the lens of documentary. They might not be extravagant or glamorous, but they have definitely shown their own minute yet genuine power.
Perhaps because documentaries offer us perspectives to understand the world and avenues to imagine it?
The pandemic that has lasted for more than two years is still raging, and wars have broken out and continued in various regions. If it is up to a plague or a war to decide the matter of life and death, at least it is at our disposal who to remember forever, through films?
As soon as the projector is turned on, real-life stories unfold frame after frame on the screen, and even the pandemic cannot prevent the documentaries from all over the world from greeting the audience in the cinema. This, perhaps, is the magic of a film festival. We sincerely invite everyone to join the MOIDF and continue our imaginary journey in the world on the big screen.
*According to dictionaries, the term “outsider” can be translated into Chinese as: 1. an outsider; 2. a layman; 3. a foreigner; 4. an outcast; 5. a person with only a small chance of winning.
