After waiting for several decades, Vitalina has finally taken a flight to Lisbon. Yet upon her arrival, she is told that her husband had been dead and buried three days earlier. What awaits Vitalina is not the bright future pledged by her husband when he left years ago, but the lingering memories of sadness and misery…

Observing the Cape Verdean migrant community in Lisbon for a long time, Portugese director Pedro Costa (MOIDF’s “Director in Focus” in 2016) illustrates the livelihood, destitution and homelessness, and economic imbalance of the community in the past two decades and more through many filmography productions. In his collaboration with actress Vitalina Varela this time, both explore the complexities of love and hatred as the colonial history and personal history intertwine.

Costa’s distinctive aesthetics of minimalism and darkness creates a string of scarred and bruised souls and portraits that emit a faint light, eliminating the boundaries between documentary and fictional films. Enjoying high praises from the critics around the world, Vitalina Varela is regarded as the best work by Costa in his career and has won the Golden Leopard and the Leopard for Best Actress at the Locarno Film Festival.
