MOIDF
關於 About
The Macao International Documentary Film Festival (MOIDF), founded in 2016 and organized by Comuna de Han-Ian with support from the Cultural Affairs Bureau and the Cultural Development Fund, is Macao’s first and longest-running dedicated documentary film festival. Now in its eighth edition and beyond, MOIDF presents each year around 20 to 30 carefully curated documentaries from around the world, engaging the city in dialogue through cinema under a distinct annual theme.
MOIDF’s selection process is a careful curatorial journey. The programming team travels through major international festivals, searching among countless films for stories that can resonate with the diverse audiences of this city. Once a film is chosen, the team reaches out personally to directors and producers, sending invitations one by one, until these real-life stories finally reach Macao’s screens. Sections typically include New Releases, Taste of Portuguese (extending to Brazil, Cape Verde and other Portuguese-speaking regions), Director in Focus, and Classic Documentaries. Beyond screenings, the festival hosts masterclasses, seminars, workshops, the Macao Documentary Competition, and the Real Image Expansion Plan, actively nurturing local filmmakers and creating opportunities for emerging directors to present work and connect with international professionals.
Leveraging Macao’s unique position as a crossroads of Chinese and Portuguese cultures, MOIDF serves as a meaningful bridge between Chinese-speaking and Portuguese-language cinema while making documentaries more accessible to a broad public. Past editions have featured films that premiered or won awards at Venice, Berlin, Cannes and other major festivals, exploring timely themes such as social change, identity, and the boundaries between reality and illusion. Audiences are invited to reimagine the world through the lens of documentary.
Looking ahead, MOIDF aims to steadily raise its professional standards and international profile, establishing itself as a significant documentary platform in Asia and progressing toward the stature of a respected second-tier global film festival. By continuing to present high-quality selections, deepening industry exchange, and supporting local talent, the festival enriches Macao’s cultural life and offers investors and partners a platform of both artistic integrity and long-term potential. We warmly invite audiences to experience the power of non-fiction storytelling on the big screen, and welcome cultural partners to join us in advancing the sustainable growth of documentary cinema in Macao and the wider region.
