在「新疆棉事件」還未成為新聞頭條之前，周浩早已耗時八年拍攝《棉花》，走遍廣州、河南，以及中國最大的棉花生產區域——新疆，寫下一頁當今中國數千萬勞動生產者的命運史。
與周浩的前作比較，《棉花》不再聚焦曲折的人物故事，而更像一篇深度專題報道，鏡頭緊貼棉花種子下地後的命運，通過記錄種植、採摘、紡織、出口、銷售的過程，揭示農民與工人在全球化下艱苦的生存狀態，雪白而柔軟的棉花背後是不為人知的血與汗。
In COTTON, Four principal characters – a farmer, a cotton picker and workers in cotton factories are the protagonists on this odyssey into the heart of China’s cotton industry. We witness the operation of the very labour intensive industry, as the camera travels from the planting and growing of cotton in Xinjiang Province in the northwest to the fashion weeks in Guangdong Province in the south.
Tens of millions of Chinese farm labourers work day and night on the various segments that constitute the cotton industry. They grow and harvest cotton balls, spin them into yarn, weave fabrics and turn them into jeans. COTTON traces the journey of cotton involving the entire farming families.
